I know, I’ve been gone for a minute but trust me Young Broke Social Worker is still here trying to figure a way out of being broke LOL!!! I have missed you guys!! I will just do a recap since it has been months since my last blog post, so this one will be longer than usual! This past summer was amazing!!! Like, literally amazing. First, I went to the Dominican Republic and though I did not experience many adventures, I had an awesome time with great friends and travel buddies. It was a relaxing way to start the summer. We stayed in a new hotel that had just opened which I do not recommend by the way. I think going forward, I would like to Airbnb and Home-away for my travel accommodations. There is something about staying on the resort that makes me feel too much like a tourist. Nonetheless, no matter where I go with these girls, we have a good time. Last year, we went to Jamaica and are trying to make it an annual thing. We have been talking about Cuba or Aruba for the next vacation but we have not quite decided.
Shortly after my return from D.R, I was able and lucky enough to attend Curlfest 2016. For those of you who don’t know what it is, it is a natural beauty festival where so many curly girls from all over the world come together to explore a variety of different vendors for fashion and beauty and just create so much magic. When we walked up to Prospect Park where Curlfest was being held, it was one of the most beautiful sites. I had never seen so many gorgeous black and brown girls with so much style and grace in one place, ever! The vibe was extraordinary. You know how sometimes when you are around a group of girls who look like you, it’s the constant side-eye or the “what she got on?” whisper. It was nothing like that. When I eavesdropped on others conversations, it was nothing but positivity and compliments being thrown around. If you missed this event, please make your way there next year because it was awesome! Oh, and I almost forgot, I paid $0.00 to get in! WOOP WOOP!! Of course, the drive to Brooklyn cost but we were able to find free street parking and Young broke social worker is here for the free honey.
Early July, I had the opportunity to go and see K. Michelle live in concert. Now, I knew she could sing but I honestly did not give her a chance because she was just way too much for me when I saw her on her reality shows. Now one of my soul sister friends absolutely loves K. Michelle so I agreed to go with her to the House of Blues in Boston. I loved this location by the way, there was so much culture in there and the atmosphere was everything. K. Michelle put on a great show and gained one more fan. Her voice is completely out of this world. It only took us about an hour and a half to get there from Hartford and we hit a little traffic on the way but it was worth it.
This summer I had my family reunion which is always a good time because my family is so lit! LOL, I had a blast seeing everyone and just laughing with them. They make my heart smile more than they know. Since our reunion is every other year, we are planning a cousins weekend to Virginia Beach and for those of you who don’t know, that’s where it all started for Young Broke Social Worker and I have not been back since the age of 4 so I am super excited!
I forgot to mention that I saw Spike Lee and Janelle Monae this summer! I went to Afropunk Fest in Brooklyn and had such a great time. Even though my feet were killing me by the end of the night, it was dope to see so many different people from all walks of life come together. Again, free parking bro!! I literally bumped into Spike Lee walking through a crowd, he was just walking around like he wasn’t super famous and rich HAHA! It was cool and I plan on going next year but with comfortable sneakers on and a blanket to sit on.
I also turned the big 2-8 this year and I am so happy and blessed to say it. I brought in my 28th surrounded by my closest friends who are near and dear to me. It was awesome and I would not change anything about it. I did make a vow to never bring in another birthday somewhere that I have been before as well as my 29 before 29 list which I already started. 29 goals that I’d like to accomplish before my next birthday. I only have 13 right now, it is a work in progress.
If you made it this far, you are O.D loyal and I love you!! I hope you enjoyed my attempt at BRIEFLY recapping my summer. Don’t forget to leave comments, follow, subscribe and share with a friend!!
